European Solar Prize Award

The International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg and the research group Prof. Genske from Nordhausen University of Applied Sciences received the European Solar Prize for their ENERGY ATLAS in the category “solar architecture and urban planning”.

The ENERGY ATLAS takes the example of Hamburg’s Wilhelmsburg district to examine developments in future energy requirements. It presents potential for saving energy, increasing efficiency, and using renewable energies, as well as strategic steps for optimising energy supply. The analytical methods used form the basis for urban action strategies, which can be applied more generally, demonstrating how cities in particular can become the pioneers of climate protection and resource conservation.

Association of German Architects (BDA) Architecture Prize Berlin honors SELFMADE projects

Flottwell 2, 3xGRÜN, Mischen Possible and BIGyard, these are the names of some winning projects of this year’s BDA Architecture Prize Berlin, which has been awarded on November 8 honoring examplary architectural ventures in Berlin. These self-initiated building group projects demonstrate not only building quality but also a special responsibility towards society and environment – both were important criteria for the international jury. With the award and the three commending mentions the BDA Berlin honors not only the unique, lively architecture of the projects, but also the relevancy of building groups for temporary and sustainable urban living in Berlin. The four awarded projects belong to the 50 best practice examples presented in the book Selfmade City, which is released in January 2013. Besides extensive analyses of the SELFMADE projects, potentials of this kind of urban planning for the urban landscape Berlin are illuminated in essays and interviews with protagonists. The book maps 125 projects all over Berlin and thus offers an up-to-date, comprehensive overview for this subject.

The Best Designed German Books 2012

Schichten einer Region was selected as one of the best designed German books of 2012.

The Stiftung Buchkunst awarded five books in five categories for being the best designed German books of the year 2012. The JOVIS title Schichten einer Region – Kartenstücke zur räumlichen Struktur des Ruhrgebiets, designed by labor b, was selected in the category „academic books“. The book visualises individual thematic layers of one of the largest European heavy industrial conurbations in maps, graphics and writing. In so-doing it goes beyond familiar depictions to reveal unexpected structures and current processes of transformation in settlement geography, economy, landscape and ecology as well as in regard to the social and built environments. The combination of the maps at the end of the book provides a basis for discussion on the future configuration of the region.

The 25 best designed books are outstanding examples in design, concept, and production quality.
