AIT ArchitekturSalon Pop-UP presents the exhibition “Affordable Living” as part of the first international festival for architecture and urban alternatives, MAKE CITY, taking part in the conversation about new and innovative forms of living.

Housing is a basic need that, for many all over the world, remains unmet or inadequate. In order to ensure the availability of quality living space for everyone, architecture and urban development can contribute significantly to finding new solutions. The challenge of affordable housing lies in achieving an optimum relationship between costs and the “home quality“ value, which is dependent on many local parameters and cultural preferences. In light of this and based on examples of exceptional residential buildings, this book presents not only theoretical approaches but also strategies for creating affordable living spaces. These strategies can be compared by analyzing projects in their economic, social, and urban development contexts. The central question is: how can different approaches for creating affordable residential space be applied and translated to other contexts?

The exhibition is based on the publication Affordable Living - Housing for everyone (edited by Klaus Dömer, Hans Drexler, Joachim Schultz-Granberg). Using exemplary projects from international architects like Gaupenraub +/-, Lacaton & Vassal or Urbanus, it shows the problems, potentials, and dependencies that different approaches bring with them and how these impact our reality of living.

The massive need for living space in many big cities today is a chance to forge a new era of housing by creating new qualities. The URBAN LIVING exhibition presents future oriented strategies and ideas for new, affordable living typologies, livable neighborhoods, and a resilient urban development. The exhibition shows strategies for the future that strengthen the advantages of urban life styles as well as the specific characteristics of individual neighborhoods, as well as solutions that create synergies between citizens and decision makers. Projects from the International Urban Living Workshop and from the Self-Made City publication are presented. The exhibition is an interactive urban landscape in which elements are staged by invited curators, emphasizing aspects of the topic “Urban Living”. The exhibition, accompanying events and a blog (www.urbanlivingberlin.de) offer visitors various possibilities to develop and share their own ideas and desires concerning living.  Curated by Kristien Ring, AA Projects / in cooperation with the Senate Department for Urban Planning and the Environment, Berlin.

JSWD Architekten: hautnah!

JSWD are involved in a wide range of building projects—from a school to a research institute, from a residential building to a museum—and each project is conceived from scratch. One aspect dominates all finished buildings, as well as those currently under construction: they show an intense involvement with the façade, the „skin“ of the building, which connects inside and outside and gives the houses a unique character. The exhibition shows examples of prominent building envelopes.

The exhibition at the architecture gallery in Munich shows projects by the Cologne architecture firm JSWD—focusing on building envelopes.

Parallel to the opening of the 14th Architecture Biennale, the exhibition ”This is modern“ was opened on June 7 in Venice. With “This Is modern,” the German Werkbund Berlin presents the status of contemporary architecture in Germany: 22 renowned architecture firms show their designs for a German exhibition pavilion on the Biennale site in the Giardini in Venice. The existing pavilion, built in 1909 and modified in 1938, was hypothetically stated as needing renewal, reopening the question of a contemporary national exhibition building for the whole world to see.

After stations in Bühl, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg the exhibition will now be shown at mawa design gmbh.

The catalog of the exhibition is available in English and German.

Otto Zitko

In seiner zweiten Einzelausstellung bei Krobath Berlin präsentiert Otto Zitko neue großformatige Arbeiten, schwarze und silberfarbene Linien mit Ölstift und Lack auf Wabenkartons aufgetragen. „Sie stellen nicht die Installation an sich dar“, schrieb die Kunsthistorikerin Jan Avgikos über Zitkos Bilder, „sondern filtern die polarisierten Erfahrungen heraus, die für Zitkos Installationen wichtig sind.“ Sozusagen eine Konzentration. Vom Raum auf die Fläche.

Otto Zitko präsentiert neue großformatige Arbeiten in seiner zweiten Einzelausstellung in der Galerie Krobath, Berlin.

At MUDE - Museu do Design e da Moda in Lisbon Ingrid von Kruse shows a selection of portraits of well-known architects, such as Tadao Ando, Denise Scott Brown, David Chipperfield, Peter Eisenman, Norman Foster, Frank O. Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Richard Meier, Oscar Niemeyer, Ieoh Ming Pei, Renzo Piano, Richard Rogers, Álvaro Siza, Oswald Mathias Ungers, Robert Venturi, and Peter Zumthor.

All portraits are collected in the publication Eminent Architects – Seen by Ingrid von Kruse. The illustrated volume delves into the personalities and thoughts of those who designed the buildings that give form to our times. A selection of sketches, drawings, and models rounds off the examination of their artistic ideas and their thinking. Within the context of this broad, composite view, the architects as they see themselves and the ideals that lie behind their ideas attain clear contours.

The photographer Ingrid von Kruse shows a selection of her portraits of well-known architects, such as David Chipperfield, Norman Foster, Frank O. Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Rem Koolhaas, Daniel Libeskind, Oscar Niemeyer, Oswald Mathias Ungers, amongst others.

gmp—On Old Foundations

Aedes Am Pfefferberg, Christinenstraße 18–19, 10119 Berlin

The architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) are known worldwide for their large-scale projects such as airports, sport venues, train stations, and cultural buildings. Their work with historical buildings is less known. This exhibition, which was first curated for the 14th Venice Architecture Biennale, presents 32 projects, explaining the different possible approaches to this problem. This creates a multi-faceted kaleidoscope of the many architectural options available. What is also evident is that engagement with the history of a place is a necessary part of responsible building development. 

JOVIS launched a new publication series with gmp: gmp FOCUS. The series documents an exemplary selection of gmp buildings, by means of detailed texts and photo galleries by renowned culture journalists, architecture critics, and photographers.

With the exhibition “On Old Foundations. Building in a historic context“, the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partners (gmp) exhibit a side of their oeuvre that is less well known to the general public: how to deal with historic buildings.

Book presentation, lecture, and discussion

Lecture by Jean-Philippe Vassal (Lacaton&Vassal, Paris, Jury member of the Urban Living workshop) and a discussion with the State Senate Department Director of Berlin, Regula Lüscher.

How can residential building strengthen urban structures and provide new opportunities through densification? How can monostructures be broken up and open spaces be upgraded? And how can architecture meet the requirements of new forms of cohabitation, either owing to a broader social mix or to the combination of living and working?

The newly published book Urban Living—Strategies for the Future presents convincing concepts, which show that affordable residential space can also have a high structural quality. Designs and solutions from the international Urban Living workshop, which more than thirty international architecture offices took part in, provide excellent examples of the potential qualities of future residential construction.

Norbert Bisky—Balagan on Bötzow

Atelierhaus Bötzow, Prenzlauer Allee 242, 10405 Berlin

Balagan is the title of Norbert Bisky’s exhibit of new works, showing at the Atelierhaus from March 27 until August 30. In winter 2014/2015, Bisky swapped ateliers with Israeli painter Erez Israeli, based in Tel Aviv. The artworks created during this time are devoted to urbanity, feelings of impenetrability regarding our real and virtual living environments. The compositions were painted especially for the Atelierhaus on Bötzow. The exhibit, with large-format, intensely colored works as well as a series of small-format works of oil on paper that are being show for the first time in Germany and three pieces from the Sammlung HGN show both sides of this coin—angst and joie de vivre. The exhibit title says it all—Balagan—which can mean confusion and chaos as well as partying and exuberance.

Balagan is the title of Norbert Bisky’s exhibit of new works, showing at the Atelierhaus from March 27 until August 30.
