The versatile artist Volker März (painting, performance, video, and sculpture) has filled entire exhibition spaces with hundreds of small and medium-sized painted clay figures, mostly representing historical personalities from the worlds of philosophy, literature, politics, and history. These include Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt, Friedrich Nietzsche, Adolf Eichmann, Pina Bausch, Natascha Kampusch, Josef Beuys, Nelson Mandela, Petr Ginz, Peter Sloterdijk, Christoph Schlingensief etc. In the new book Laughing Windows, all the aforementioned personalities are asked about their childhood, amongst other things. Furthermore, their lives and ways of thinking are explored in relation to the role of the child in our society. Childhood plays a central role, as the artist uses many absurd figures of children to add a new artistic dimension to the terms “relative reality”, “the power of gold”, “the lie”, and “the way to respective freedom”. These include clay figures, pictures, photographs, texts, and music videos (at the exhibitions), presented as understandably as possible so that they are also accessible to children and young people.
