Berliner Bauten und Projekte 1965–2005

In 1965, Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg founded the architect’s office gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner in Hamburg; since then, numerous projects have helped it to establish an undisputed reputation both at home and abroad. However, 40 years of gmp von Gerkan, Marg und Partner have also – and primarily – made a considerable mark on the architecture of Berlin. Here alone, they have erected more than 25 buildings, ranging from Tegel Airport to Berlin’s new main railway station – Lehrter Bahnhof –, which is to be opened in 2006. Photographs by Marcus Bredt throw a surprising light on the buildings constructed and tell the story of those Berliners who have lived with and in gmp’s architecture for the past four decades. This richly illustrated volume – including a detailed list of works in Berlin – describes the individual projects, located by district, and so offers both professionals and laymen an exciting and informative insight into the architectural history of gmp in Berlin. An unusual, unique guide to Berlin!

The architect’s office gmp von Gerkan, Marg and Partners, founded by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg in 1965, has established an undisputed reputation in the architectural world during the last forty years. Today, the office realises successful projects in many national and international locations. Its oeuvre ranges from transport buildings, museums and theatres to office and shopping complexes. However, few people know that the architects have also planned and built more than 20 villas. These individual buildings combine tradition and the modern age using a language of forms and materials primarily related to the genius loci: whether the façade is wood, rendering or glass – each villa blends into the surrounding topography in a unique way. Many of them represent outstanding examples of individual house architecture. In this publication, a detailed documentation of selected exam-ples with photos and plans is supplemented by essays by the well-known author Gert Kähler. He investigates the history of living and living spaces, and – in conversation with the architects – examines their own personal relationship to living, well-being and materiality.

Why does the architect Meinhard von Gerkan design furniture? Because obviously there are no other pieces of furniture available on the market that could be used instead. The furniture is necessary to advance the dream of the architect of the perfect design combining house and furnishings, as well as exterior and interior. The book provides an insight into the aesthetics of the architect – consisting of clear, mainly geometrical shapes, finished with high-quality materials and a strongly sensuous component, they give evidence to a design philosophy that resists the market of quick wear and tear and counters it with (multi) functional and clearly-structured, simple, and enduring design objects.
