Norbert Bisky was born in Leipzig in 1970. He is one of the best-known artists of his generation in Germany. Since the late 1990s Bisky has attracted international attention with his frequently large-format canvases. His works defy discussion and take their inspiration from a wide variety of art-historical sources. Thematically his pictures often revolve around sexuality, scenes of disaster and destruction. Fragments of human bodies and figural elements suddenly dissolve into abstract surfaces and forms, while gentle pastel shades encounter strong, intensive colors. The paintings of Norbert Bisky are characterized by a very special presence and dynamism. His watercolors, on the other hand, appear playful and are committed to paper with a light hand and clear chromaticity. They frequently depict groups of male nudes set against abstract forms, permitting associations with the beach and the sea. Through the integration of the white pictorial space, these works are sometimes produced in very small formats and arouse an impression of great lightness. The individual figures are not developed in detail, but are subtly sketched with virtuoso brushwork. Norbert Bisky is a supreme master of the media of his choice. Through his great precision and in spite of the immediacy of the color application, he creates a strong narrative association whose brilliance and mastery are unparalleled.
