In order to develop a sustainable, cost effective perspective for this top-class technological monument and to guarantee its long time preservation, Bewag plc. & co. Limited Partnership, representing Vattenfall Europe plc, with the federal ministry of Transport, Building and Housing and Berlin Monument Protection Department initiated a European competition for students of Architecture, Urban Planning and Monument Preservation in a first step towards the revitalisation of the complex. A wide spectrum of forward-looking concepts for conversion emerged, which were examined and proved feasible using various types of plans and planning tools. The scope of innovative suggestions covered trade and research locations, sport complexes, congress and event centres, sport boat harbours and cultural uses such as colleges, museums and libraries including a design for an urn cemetery. Long-term plans for its utilisation as a result of professional, convincing examinations of the listed property are the subject of this publication, which describes the power station and the contributions made to the competition.
