A cofounder of the Metabolist Movement, Kisho Kurokawa is considered one of Japan’s most important architects today. This bilingual publication accompanies the exhibition at the German Museum of Architecture (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main and offers a representative survey of Kurokawa’s works from forty-five successful years. It presents his world-famous, almost classical buildings, but also less familiar designs such as the Capsule House K or Yamagata Hawaii Dreamland, which were well ahead of their times. Besides Kurokawa’s more recent internationally acclaimed projects such as the addition to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the volume also includes three projects of astounding dimensions currently under construction: the National Art Center Tokyo, the high-rise complex Fusionpolis in Singapore and Zhengdong New District in China, a city to be founded for 150,000 inhabitants. They indicate that Kisho Kurokawa’s architecture and design are not only characterised by originality and constructive clarity, but also by great continuity; shaped by his own “philosophy of symbiosis“.
