Far-reaching measures to restructure big industrial areas will define the future of European cities and regions. Antiquated industrial sites are being abandoned more and more. But what potential for development is presented by disused factories, industrial wastelands and partially vacated workers’ housing estates? Can they be salvaged and reused? This volume presents different methods and strategic instruments with which to improve our opportunities to reuse industrial buildings and factory housing. The authors take advantage of direct confrontation with the relevant buildings by examining the industrial remains of the Lusatian industrial region on site. Their findings pinpoint new possibilities for reuse and funding, as well as project development and sponsorship.
