Development of the new “Bildungsforum” education center in Potsdam began in 2010, on the site of the former municipal and state library. In future it will house the library and the “Albert Einstein” adult education center. The purpose of combining the library and adult education usages under one roof, as well as science and research, is to establish a central institution within the Potsdam educational landscape, which brings together science, culture, economics, tourism and especially education. The design by the architect Reiner Becker is a fusion of functionality and modern architecture. The roof over the interior courtyard is being opened up and then closed off below the second floor with a glass construction, creating an atrium flooded with light. A mezzanine floor and a gallery are grouped around the atrium. The second floor will house the adult education center. The storerooms and the library’s administrative offices will be located on the third floor. Thus the Bildungsforum will offer not only a pleasant environment, but also a spatial concept that is optimal for learning.
