Building work within existing structures is gaining importance in architecture, making considerable demands on the planning architects. This volume presents the project Vulkan.
Köln in Cologne, which is currently considered a prime example of the successful renewal of industrial wasteland in the cathedral city: the historical brick-built buildings of the
former lantern factory Vulkan have been converted into a place uniting business, leisure and residential opportunities, thus corresponding to new concepts of life and work in the 21st century. Factory floors have been turned into “thinktanks” for designers, TV producers and advertising professionals,
situated next-door to generous apartments, artists’ studios and a small park where people meet to play boule –ideal conditions for the generation of creative networks. The book “Vulkan.Köln” includes contributions by users and residents of the area, but also offers investors, builders and architects an opportunity to voice their opinions. A vivid
background description traces the progress of this remarkably coherent property concept – making the book into a standard work on property development within existing structures.
