A small book on the extensive topic “Women in Art”: Employing a pictorial language interwoven with mythology, history and topography, the painter Bruno Gutknecht searches for a contemporary art form with comprehensive significance. By attempting an artistic interpretation of the disorder, estrangements and disharmonies of his life, Bruno Gutknecht arrives at fundamental questions concerning differing images of women. The dominant, active vitality of the strong-willed woman emerges repeatedly in his works. The painter seeks authentic statements to counter the arbitrariness of contemporary art: the field of conflict between male and female attitudes and modes of thought is clearly illustrated by the body language of his nudes and individual portraits. The pictures are supplemented by four text contributions interpreting Bruno Gutknecht’s painting and defining its place in art history – written exclusively by women.
