The Deutscher Werkbund has been concerned with modern product design, architecture and urban planning since its foundation in 1907. In this publication to accompany the exhibition “Projects for Berlin – Dudler, Kahlfeldt, Kleihues”, the Berlin Werkbund presents three pioneering projects by well-known Werkbund architects. These exemplify the wide range of tasks faced by Berlin in its role as a scientific, cultural and services
metropolis: the “Jacob und Wilhelm Grimm Zentrum, Zentrale Universitätsbibliothek, Computer und Medienservice” in Berlin-Mitte by Max Dudler, the project “Schauhallen Berlin,
Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst” in Berlin-
Oberschöneweide by Petra and Paul Kahlfeldt and the “Concorde Berlin” in Berlin-Charlottenburg by Jan Kleihues. These projects – still at different stages of realisation – open
up new perspectives for the urban context and the character of their respective districts. All three demonstrate especially high standards of quality and design. The project descriptions
are supplemented by text contributions written by the Building Director of the Berlin Senate Hans Stimmann, the President of the Berlin Werkbund, Helga Schmidt-Thomsen, and the wellknown journalist and architectural critic Gerwin Zohlen, whose essay examines current building work in Berlin.
