Tangshan, an industrial city in the hinterland of Beijing and Tianjin, was almost completely destroyed by a devastating earthquake in 1976. Its reconstruction was declared a national task. In the process, a large city without a centre or urbane quality was produced out of thin air. Over the next few years, Tangshan expects major growth in its urban population. Its area is to be expanded by a quarter to cope. In this, the Xiangdeli residential area is to set standards through approaches pointing the way ahead and with new technologies. In the process, the Chinese town planners are cooperating closely with international experts.
