Very few German offices of structural engineering can look back on a tradition as long as that of the engineering company GSE. Established in Berlin in 1930, today GSE successfully continues to realise famous buildings such as the Chamber Music Hall in Berlin, the Jewish Museum and the Chancellor’s offices. It has also been involved in the reconstruction of existing buildings such as the Citadel in Spandau, the Brandenburg Gate or the ceiling of the Berlin Philharmonic Hall. Complex restoration of monuments, sculptures and fountains completes the wide range of work undertaken by the firm. This book examines the history of the company and its influential personalities and investigates the constantly changing tasks and working conditions faced by an engineering office. Unconventional, ingenious constructions evidence commitment, responsibility and the enthusiasm to search for innovative solutions in cooperation with architects. 20 outstanding projects illustrate the diversity of the firm’s engineering work. Numerous photos and drawings enable readers to see behind the scenes of architecture, to recognise the instinct required to fully grasp architectural designs and the skill needed to provide these with anchorage, beauty and durability. The book demonstrates that construction demands great creativity, from the architect as from the engineer, who thus makes an important contribution to building culture.
