This book looks at the dialogue between art and architecture. There has always been an enriching and inspiring exchange between both disciplines. However, borders have often been transgressed. Free artists unilaterally take on tasks in the sphere of the built world, something frequently perceived as interference, and this precisely with a profession, which architects all-too readily claim just for themselves. Conflict and tension often arise. "Rethinking: space time architecture" invites everyone to reconsider the possibilities of this cooperation between both art forms. It presents places in the middle of Berlin, which will become venues in summer 2002. This is at the initiative of numerous galleries and will occur parallel to the UIA Architecture Congress in July 2002. Light installations, material collages, video art and other media will meet up with rooms, construction sites, interior yards, or architecture. Interdisciplinary installations with architecture and space-related themes show interfaces of forms, highlighting their respective boundaries, including aesthetic ones. Artists like Julian Opie, Cida de Aragão, and Les Schliesser will be cooperating in this with well-known architects, referring to phenomena like mass mobility, urbanization, or privatisation of the public sphere. The discussion promises to be an exciting experience, precisely because of the differing approaches between art and architecture.
