Unquestionably, Rave Architekten are regarded as an institution in Berlin. Viewing the complex work of brothers Jan and Rolf Rave, it seems that in an exemplary way, their buildings mirror the key stages of architectural development from the early 1960s—and with Roosje Rave from 1990—to the present day.
In their constant and determined efforts at contemporary building, the Raves never regarded themselves as avant-garde, but their key works like Ruhleben crematorium, the former BfA on Fehrbelliner Platz, or their buildings for the International Building Exhibition Berlin 1979–87 reveal a sensitive awareness of relevant architectural trends during the last fifty years, which have witnessed such change in architecture. To this extent, therefore, their work has written a significant piece of architectural history while consistently rejecting fashionable attitudes. This book aims to outline that history in words and pictures, providing a vivid documentation with examples of the Raves’ work.
