In future, the key tasks of town planning in Germany will not be new building and the expansion of cities, but primarily the transformation, reuse and supplementation of existing structures. In connection with new strategies of social, economic, and ecological planning, approaches to urban redevelopment are gaining importance, so enabling us to rediscover, unfold, and develop the potential of traditional structures from different epochs. Architectonic interventions accentuate pointers towards the future, creating urban planning ensembles that successfully merge the old and the new, thus lending a fresh profile to entire districts and improving urban life. The projects receiving the German Town Planning Award 2008 are model examples of such concepts of urban renewal; at the same time, they document the balance of current urban planning achievements in Germany.
