Le Corbusier (1887-1965) was one of the most important and influential, but also probably most controversial 20th century architects. He built his third similar housing complex, after Marseille and Nantes, in the context of Interbau in Berlin from 1956-58; the "Unité d'habitation, Type Berlin" is a 17-storey high-rise resting on stilts and providing 557 apartments. The Corbusier house in Berlin has lost none of its outstanding significance in the history of architecture, even 50 years after completion. What could be more appropriate, therefore, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Corbusier house, than the facsimile reprint of a powerfully eloquent brochure dating from 1958? It is supplemented by an annotated survey of important restoration measures, documenting the current state of the building. |
